Champion Hereford sells to Northern Ireland

News that Gageboro Esquire National Bull Calf and Supreme Hereford Champion at Tullamore has sold to Northern Ireland at a price believed to be in excess of £4,000 sterling or €5,500 comes as no surprise.

The ten month old bull was a stand out at the recent Championships at Tullamore when exhibited by local breeder Mr. John Holloway of Gageboro, Horseleap, Moate, Co. Westmeath. Purchased by Mr. Desmond Kelly of Ballygawley, Co. Tyrone who was deeply impressed with this Churchill Storm son out of Gageboro Una at Tullamore he inspected the dam and siblings within 24 hours and a deal was struck in recent days.

Mr. Kelly was a major buyer at an internet production sale held by John Douglas of Mains of Airies, Stranraer in 2005 and is in the process of expanding his Hereford herd within the past two years. It is known that Mr. Clive Davies Hereford Judge at Tullamore was very impressed with this young sire prospect and also viewed him immediately following Tullamore.

Mr. Holloway has also sold another Storm son Gageboro Eugenic also a prize winner at Tullamore to Co. Kilkenny breeder Tom Brennan at €5,000 as a herd sire for his Balleen herd.

Progeny of Churchill Storm V583 the Australian sire whose semen was imported via the Irish Hereford Society’s Breed Improvement Scheme featured several times in the winners enclosure at Tullamore and with fellow Australian sire Yarram Pompeii V055 has been producing some excellent progeny exhibiting increased muscling and carcass qualities.

Mr. Holloway has been very successful at Tullamore in previous years winning both the National Heifer Calf and National Bull Calf Championship. In 2005 he had the unique distinction of winning both Championships in the same year.

The Society holds sales this autumn at Roscommon on October 10th and at Kilmallock on October 20th.
