Herefords met very good demand at the Society's annual October sale in Roscommon on Tuesday 19th October. It was clear from the outset that the greatest demand was for bulls of high merit and there were a range of five star bulls on offer.
The Champion Balleen Gilbert was exhibited by well known Kilkenny breeder G & T Brennan Freshford who last year exhibited the Reserve Champion Balleen Maximus at the same venue and sold for €3,700. Purchaser Gerry Donnelly Lisseycasey Co Clare was very pleased to secure this five star bull ranked in the top 91% of the breed for weanling export and a five star across breed for maternal traits docility and gestation length at €3,100. By Gageboro Eugenic the very successful herd sire at Balleen, Gilbert is out of Balleen Pride by Balleen Potent.

The Reserve Champion fifteen month old Corlismore Robin Hood exhibited by Sean McKiernan Corlismore Co Cavanwas was the days top selling bull at €3,400 to Percy Jordan of Proudstown Tara Co Meath. Stanley Macadam Bull of the Year at Trim in September he is a five star bull ranked in the top 98% of the breed for SBV, weanling export, beef carcass and maternal traits. His sire Corlismore Pompeii by Yarram Pompeii V055 is currently rated the top Hereford sirein the ICBF rankings. His dam is Grianan Prim a Churchill Storm daughter bred by T & A Fitzgerald. This is the fourth Hereford bull in as many weeks sold in excess of €3,000 by Mr McKiernan whose recent sales also include ten heifers sold in late summer at an undisclosed but believed to be a substantial price. His Corlismore Nero 516 also by the five star Corlismore Pompeii out of Corlismore Penny sold at €2,500 to William Conroy Rossmore Woodford Co Galway.
T & A Fitzgerald's fourteen month old Grianan Jumbo once again a five star bull across all beef traits and daughter fertility ranked in the top 96% of the breed sold at €3,200 to John Grogan Carhuefree Killimer Co Clare. By the five star Yarram Pompeii V055 he is out of Grianan Ulrica by Moyclare Rich and is one of the most successful dams at the Grianan herd.
The Co. Leitrim breeder Paddy Farrell Ballinwing exhibited Doonavereen Podge whose homebred dam Poppy is also by Yarram Pompeii V055. Sired by Breaney Sam (BNX) he sold at €2,000 to David Redhouse of Newgrange Slane Co Meath. Bulls averaged €2,220 with a 69% clearance.
The small number of heifers forward met steady demand with the average up €50 on last year. The Champion Lisnalurg Queen Bea by Banner Dandy (BXD) exhibited by Pauline Casey Lisnalurg Sligo sold at 2400 to Northern Ireland's John Conlon of Markethill Co Armagh.
