Dairyman Bids 3900 To Secure Top Price Hereford
The increase in temperature together with the first signs of grass gave added impetus to the Hereford Society's spring sale at Nenagh. There was a very good attendance of buyers and potential buyers from locally and surrounding counties.

Top price bull Gageboro Hercules with John Holloway, Raymond & Sean Cleary and Niall Daly
The days top price was reached when the hammer came down at 3900 for Gageboro Hercules bred by well known Co Westmeath breeder John Holloway of Horseleap Moate. By Bishophill General one of the most successful Irish Hereford bulls to stand at Enfield AI Station over several years this 18 month old bull is out of the home bred Gageboro Beatrice herself a Tullamore prizewinner.
Hercules was purchased by dairy farmers Sean & Raymond Cleary of Streamstown, Killyon,Birr, Co, Offaly who beat off stiff competition from a well known breeder to secure their purchase.
The Cleary's had previously purchased a Gageboro bull that was reserve champion at Nenagh five years ago he has given good service and bred well. Prior to that they had a bull of another breed which tended to cause the late calvers calve later due to longer gestation. They find a ready market for their dropped calves at approx 2 weeks to repeat customers mostly neighbouring farmers at 250 for the bull calves and 150 for the heifers. Sean Cleary says the heifers are good value at that and are probably worth more but he values his customers and their repeat business. A third of the herd is put to a dairy bull via AI then the Hereford goes on 24 hour duty.
Mr Holloway sold three bulls at Nenagh G Hercules, the Reserve Champion Gageboro Hobo by Glaslough Esquire and Gageboro Hadman to average 2485.
