Nenagh & Limerick Champion Sells to UK at 5,000

Interest and demand for Irish Herefords continues to be brisk with on farm sales at home to Northern Ireland and to the UK reported since the Tullamore Show.

The latest sale reported is that of Lakelodge Storm 2 nd calf champion at Nenagh and overall Hereford Champion at Limerick from the herd of Henry Dudley, The Populars, Dovea, Co. Tipperary. A UK consortium including Mr. Clive Davis Hereford judge at the recent Tullamore Show from Herefordshire UK and the Spooner Brothers from Staffordshire UK paid €5,000 for this very promising ten month old bull calf.

By Churchill Storm V583 (whose semen was imported from Australia via the Irish Hereford Society's Breed Improvement Scheme) sire of this years Tullamore Champion Gageboro Esquire recently exported to Northern Ireland he is out of Kilsunny Lass Una herself a prize-winner at many shows.

This is the first major sale for Henry Dudley's select Lakelodge herd founded on several of the successful lines of the well know Kilsunny herd of his brother Trevor.

This purchase by Mr. Clive Davies follows on the purchase in 1994 of Oxhill Laurence Bull Calf Champion at Tullamore from Gabriel Glynn of Coole, Co. Westmeath by his late father Ray when he judged the National Hereford event at Tullamore. Laurence went on to be a very successful herd sire at Mr. Davies Westwood herd with 16 of his sons and several daughters selling into UK pedigree herds.

The Spooner Brothers in 1995 purchased a ten month old bull Ballymartin Martin from the herd of P.R. & E. Kingston, Ballymartin, Glencairn, Co. Waterford that produced some excellent progeny at the Dieulacresse herd.

Recent exports of Herefords to the UK in the past two years have been inconvenienced by the fact that it is not possible to ship pedigree cattle to the UK other than through Belfast/Stranraer though in many instances Rosslare would be easier on man and beast.

The Hereford Society holds sales at Roscommon on October 10 th and at Kilmallock on October 20 th .
