Roscommon March Sale - Herefords sell to 3700

A larger than expected crowd attended the Society's March Sale at Roscommon. Demand was very good, given the current financial climate and indeed the unusually cold and frosty spring. Grass growth is well back on usual particularly in the southern counties which would expect to have a large proportion of dairy cows out to grass by now.

The day's top price 3700 was reached for a well grown and thickly muscled bull, Corlismore Supreme 506. Bred and exhibited by Sean McKiernan, Corlismore, Co. Cavan, the November '08 born bull is sired by Corlismore Pompeii currently the top muscled Hereford in recent figures released by ICBF. The dam is Corlismore Sue by Churchill Storm out of Corlismore Venus. With a five star rating across all traits he sold to Co. Laois breeder Noel Allen of Ballaghmore, Borris in Ossory.

Reserve Champion, Castledaly James from Michael Farrell, Castledaly, Moate was also a five star bull across all traits. Of similar breeding to the previous bull he is sired by Moyclare Earl, a grandson of Yarram Pompeii V055 and out of Castledaly Carol 4 th by Churchill Storm. Purchaser Duncan Crawford, a dairy farmer from Beragh, Co. Tyrone beat off stiff opposition from two pedigree Hereford breeders to secure the bull at 3250.

The day's Champion was Borin Jake from Patsy & Anne Smith, Tullyinchin, Mountain Lodge, Co. Cavan. By Corlismore Pompeii, the same sire as the top price bull, he is also out of a Churchill Storm daughter Borin Annie. This 5 star bull was a steal at 2300 to Eamon Sweeney, Ballylar, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. The Smiths sold the top price bull Borin Boris by the same sire at the same venue in 2008.

Kye Paul 494 also registered five stars across all traits with a muscle score of 118 selling at 2600 to Robert Jordan, Burren, Co.Clare. Bred and exhibited by Padraig McGrath, Kye, Elphin, he was sired by Yarram Pompeii V055 and out of Kye Spot 4 th by Lisnabin Jovial.

Allowdale Meringo by Ervie Classic S30 from relatively new kids on the block, Liam Philpott and Anne Pounds of Knocknacolan, Kanturk, Co. Cork sold at 2500 out of Breaney Aloise by Breaney Nugget. The purchaser was Tom Barry of Baytown Park, Dunboyne, Co. Meath. The Society's Munster Branch held a very successful Field Evening at the Allowdale Herd last autumn.

Moyclare Hoist from Michael Molloy, Belmont, Co. Offaly was by Moyclare Earl, the same sire as the Reserve Champion out of Moyclare Christina by Ballinalick Bliss. He sold at 2500 to Patrick O'Rourke, Ardlahan, Kildimo, Co. Limerick .

Other principal prices included Glaslough Harry by Glaslough Cracker at 2200 to Alan Boyle, Co. Down and Glaslough Harvey by Ballyaville Nelson at 2000 to Jordan Rice, Armagh . Both bulls were bred and exhibited by Sam & Nigel Heatrick, Glaslough, Co. Monaghan. Ardmulchan Eddy a first prizewinner from Phil Smyth of Navan, Co.
