Solid Demand for Hereford at Roscommon
The Hereford Society's final sale of the spring season held at Roscommon had no outstanding prices, but breeders were well satisfied with the overall average of 1733 and a 72% clearance.
The Champion Glaslough Fleecer was exhibited by S & N Heatrick, Glaslough. Sired by the homebred Glaslough Cracker and out of Drumakeenan Pansy 91 st by Cill Cormaic Generator, he sold to E & P Jones, Riverside, Kenagh, Co. Longford at a snip €2050.

The day's top price of €2200 was paid for Shalon Rodge by Eamon McKiernan of Monasterboice, Drogheda . Bred by Noel Conlon of Ashbourne, the bull was exhibited by John & Seamus Crosbie, Wilkinstown, Co. Meath. By Corlismore Winner a Visa son, he is out of Shalon Avril with AI bulls Kilronan Leader and Rathcor Leo in the background.
Eamon McKiernan had earlier exhibited the Reserve Champion, Knockmountagh Gamble by Ervie ClassicS30, out of Knockmountagh Rebecca, selling at a somewhat disappointing €1750 to David Wilson, Magheraveely, Co. Fermanagh.

Other main prices included Michael Farrell's Castledaly Shane, a Yarram Pompeii son at €2050 to Seamus Creegan, Carrigallen, Peter Hagan's Killoe Padraig by Trillick Best to Pat Carty, Glasson, Athlone at €2000, W.A. & I.H. Jones' Creaghpoll 1 Peter by Beverly Hills 1 Thady to Albert Howard, Killimor at €1800 and Kathleen Tynan's Breaney Fergus by Balleen Generator 6 th also at €1800 to Vincent Hynes of Castlerea.
The word from breeders is that there are a few stronger bulls still available with the majority sold on. The good beef prices at the meat plants has meant that those disposing of five, six, seven year old and older bulls have been getting good prices and are replacing for a top up of twelve to fifteen hundred euro.
