Dovea AI and Hereford Society in joint venture purchase Champion Hereford at Roscommon for €7,000

Herefords met very good demand at the Hereford Society's recent sale at Roscommon driven mainly by the premium prices available for specialist beef schemes through AIBP Nenagh and Omagh Meats.

The day's champion an outstanding son of Australian sire Churchill Storm V583 was purchased at 7,000 Euro by a syndicate comprised of Dovea AI Station and the Irish Hereford Society's Breed Improvement Program.

The eighteen month old well muscled bull was bred by Co. Monaghan breeders Sam & Nigel Heatrick. Out of Glaslough Urika by herd Sire Cloonbracken Mattie the grandam Glaslough Nell is by Gageboro Suave.

The overall championship at Roscommon has just eluded the Heatrick's on several occasions until now when they swept the boards with the championship and top price.

Another bull from the Glaslough herd Edgar sired by Australian Yarram Pompeii V055 sold at 2,900 to Paul Larkin, Dunderry, Navan. Co, Meath.

The days Reserve Champion Gageboro Excalibur was shown by John Holloway, Horseleap, Moate, Co. Westmeath again he was sired by Churchill Storm V583 and sold at 5,000 to Tom Barry, Baytown Park, Dunboyne, Co. Meath. A very well put together bull he is out of Gageboro April by Gageboro Timothy and its grandam Gageboro Pricilla by Bishophill General. Mr. Holloway has had some considerable success in recent times with progeny of Storm including the Supreme Champion at Tullamore later sold as herd sire to Des Kelly, Ballygawley, Co Tyrone.

Other principal prices included Cill Cormaic Bart sold at 4,500 to Margret and Jack Newman, Hiskinstown, Delvin, Co.Westmeath. Bred by David Larkin, The Hermitage, Kilcormaic, Co, Offaly he was sired by Ballinpraise Brandy which also sired last years Roscommon Champion and top price bull sold to John Johnson, Gorey. His dam is Lislaughtin Playgirl by Graigue Playboy.

Woodview Emmit sold at 4,000 to John Grogan, Carhuefree, Killimer, Co. Clare bred by F & RDF Abbott, Drumcrow, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan he is by herd sire Woodview Sergeant out of Woodview Kerrie by CH Visa 57X.

Ballylongane 1 Batavia 3 rd sold at 3,400 to Brendan O'Donoghue, Dunbro Hse, St. Margarets, Co. Dublin . Bred by Kieran Harty of Ballyheigue, Co. Kerry he is sired by Australian Poll Hereford and former Sydney Champion Wiranya Batavia (available through the Society's BIS). He is out of Trillick Honey by CH Daytona 57D.

Aughmaree Archie sold at 3,300 to Partick Lynch, Ullanes, Ballymakwera, Co.Cork. Bred by Willie Stroker, Kilteevan, Co. Roscommon he is sired by Yarram Pompeii V055 out of Aughmaree Trixie by Dunrobin Hallmark.

Demand for lower carcass weights and the Hereford Beef Schemes which include the well established Irish Hereford Prime initiative with AIBP Nenagh and Pallas Foods and also the Certified Hereford beef initiative recently announced by the Irish Hereford Society in partnership with Omagh Meats in Northern Ireland are credited with driving demand.

Suckler and dairy farmers anxious to produce quality Hereford stock to meet the specifications and reap the reward of premium prices available for top quality product are prepared to pay that bit extra for the better sires.

There was on overall average of 2,630 with an 82% clearance.

The Society's next sale is at Nenagh on Saturday April 21 st .
