Report from Roscommon October 2005 5,100 FOR TOP PRICE HEREFORD Strong demand for Herefords continued at the Society's October Sale at Roscommon with heifers outselling bulls.

The days Champion Cloonbracken Champion bred by Richard O'Beirne, Kilconly, Tuam sired by Cloonbracken Performer (CNP) out of a homebred dam by CH Visa 57X sold to Patrick Cahill, Shankill, Co. Cavan at 4,000. The Reserve Champion Drumboy Vinny bred by Margaret Kilrane, Mohill sired by Lisnalurg Vinny out of a homebred dam by Standard Lad 93J sold at 2,500 to Leo O'Shaughnessy, Askeaton, Co. Limerick. However the days top price 5, 100 was paid for Mrs. Mary McCall's Adoonlough Rover by Corlismore Utopia and out of Adoonlough Margo by Tibradden Boy he sold to JJ Farrell, Trillick-a-Temple, Co. Longford. Demand for heifers exceeded supply as existing and new breeders fought it out to secure additional breeding stock.

Mr. Trevor Dudley had a field day with his string of five averaging 2,646 all sired by his stock bull Glaslough Ruskin he sold Kilsunny Lass's Amber at 3,500 to Michael O'Sullivan, Ennis - Kilsunny April at 3,100 to David Young, Athy - Kilsunny Queen Beverely at 2,600 to Mathew Goulding, Tralee. Other principal heifer prices included the top price of 3,750 paid by Andrew McGeough, Dundalk to F & RDF Abbott, Killeshandra for Woodview Wilma sired by Woodview Sergeant, FH Queen Patricia bred by Frank Harrington at 3,500 to David Larkin, Kilcormack.

Overall there was very good demand for the better quality bulls with several breeders still on the look out for a potential herd sire. Hereford females have not experienced such demand for some time. Averages bulls 2,150 with an 82% clearance Heifers averaged 2,220 with 95% clearance. The Society's final autumn sale at Kilmallock sale takes place on October 21 st next.
