HEREFORDS SELL TO 6,100
A packed ring side saw tremendous demand for Herefords at the Society's Premier sale at Roscommon.
Kevin & Monica Diffleys fourteen month old Duibhgiolla Popular a son of Australian bull Yarram Pompeii sold for the days top price of 6,100. Out of a homebred dam by BB Power 0270 this outstanding young bull sold to dairy farmer and breeder Martin Delahunty of Tenniscarthy, Freshford. Two other bulls exhibited by the Diffleys Duibhgiolla Pavarotti by Meiltron Leisure and Rudolph again by Yarram Pompeii sold to Frank Dowling, Balleen, Freshford at 3,500 and to Paddy O'Rourke, Ardlahan, Kildimo at 2,900 to total 12,500 average 4,166.
The days Champion Cill Cormaic Clinton exhibited by David Larkin, Kilcormac sold at 4,800 to suckler farmer and new breeder John W. Johnston Tomagaddy, Gorey. Sired by Bishophill General son Ballinphraise Brandy he is out of a Visa dam purchased at the Fitzell sale three years ago.
Michael Molloy, Belmont, Co. Offaly exhibited the Reserve Champion another Yarram Pompeii son Moyclare Dan out of a homebred cow by Moyclare Rich. He sold to Philip O'Connell, Abbeyfeale at 4,100.
Balleen Storm 3 rd by Australian Churchill Storm exhibited by Tom Brennan, Freshford sold to Co. Monaghan breeder Cathal Flynn, Tullyard at 4,100. Coote Geelan, Dromod, Co. Leitrim paid 3,400 for Woodview Daragh by Woodview Sergeant exhibited by F. & R.D.F. Abbott, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan.
With an overall average of 2,825 and a range of 1,575 to 6,100 this gives an indication of current demand for the breed. Much of the demand is driven by commercial beef producers aiming for the Hereford Prime beef market.
