CHAMPION HEREFORD TO TOP UK HERD AT 4800

The feature transaction of the Hereford Society Premier Sale at Roscommon was the sale of Champion Grianan Cantona to Cambridgeshire based A.G .Wright & Sons ( Farms). Bred by T & A Fitzgerald of Mount Temple, Moate. The champion is sired by Australian Bull Yarram Pompeii V055, out of Grianan Ulricka by Moyclare Rich and out of a cow bred by current Society President Mr. R.S. Kenny.
A.G.Wright & Sons represented at the sale by Michael Church & Robert Clarke who judged the event were most impressed by the bulls strength and presence and by the quality and consistency of bulls exhibited. The firm run in excess of 4,000 acres of mainly arable farming. The enterprise includes the successful 100 cow Hermitage and Hillrow pedigree Hereford herd. The firm has acquired the well known Badlingham Hereford herd and farming operations as part of its recent expansion programme.
A further feature of the day was the number of progeny of Yarram Pompeii exhibited. Producing three first prize winners from four classes seven of his sons forward sold to overage just under 3,000. Semen of Yarram Pompeii was imported from Australia by the Society's Breed Improvement Scheme which holds the European rights.
The days reserve champion Udel 1 R51 Windjammer exhibited by D & D Carroll Campile failed to reach his reserve and left the ring unsold.. First prize winner Moyclare Courallie by Yarram Pompeii out of Annaroe Lila grandam of the champion was sold at 4,000. Exhibited by Michael Molloy he sold to Val Ledwith Rathregan Batterstown Co. Meath.
Other Principal prices included Cloonbracken Charlie by Cloonbracken Performer bred by Richard O'Beirne Tuam to Declan Murphy Ballinhassig Co. Cork at 3700.
Cloonart Jackaroo sired by Yarram Pompeii bred by Ms. Anne Flynn Bornacoola Co. Leitrim to Robert Deverell Ballyaville at 3100.
Grianan Charlie by Rathregan Robin out of Lislaughtin Vera bred by T & A Fitzgerald at 3050 to George Byrne Monasterevan.
Duibhgiolla Mickey by Bishophill General bred by K & M Diffley Bornacoola to William Dolan Keenagh Co. Longford at 2550.
Glaslough Captain by Ballyaville Nelson bred by Sam & Nigel Heatrick sold to David Wilson Co. Fermanagh at 2,500.
Overall bulls met with very good demand with an excellent clearance. The sale sponsored by Alltech Ireland was the first society sale at which all animals forward were linear scored.
The sale average at 2,770 is just under last years record average of 2,300.
