UDEL Herd Sale - Co. Wexford

INTERNATIONAL AND HOME BASED INTEREST DRIVES DEMAND AT HEREFORD SALE .

Top price Heifer 6,100.

Bidders from the UK, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic vied with each other to secure to class Hereford genetics at Saturdays first ever production sale at the Udel Herd of David & Daithi Carroll in Campile Co. Wexford.


UDEL Cows & Calves

While five heifers sold to the UK two to Scotland and three to Northern Ireland home based breeders fought off the competition to retain the majority of the prime lots on offer.

John & Una O'Sullivan from Naas, Co. Kildare who have since early spring been putting together a select herd secured a number of outstanding lots including the top price 2 year old heifer Udel 1 T62 Worthy Gem at 6,100 a daughter of Udel 1 R51 Trailblazer National Hereford Champion in 2002 and RDS Champion in 2003. The O'Sullivans also secured Udel 1 R51 X Tolled Gem an 18 month old heifer by Doonbiddie Hustler out of Udel 1 J7 Priceless Jem possibly the Carrolls top breeding cow at 5,200. They also secured 2 nine month old heifers Udel 1 R51 Xmas Plum at 3,600 and Udel 1 R51 Xmas Snowdrop a full sister to Veteran twice National Champion at 3,100. Other higher priced lots purchased by the O'Sullivans included Udel 1 T62 Velcro Lady at 3,000 and Udel 1 H48 Virtuous Elaine at 2,900.

Other principal prices paid by Irish breeders included Udel 1 R51 Vanilla Orange with her baby heifer calf at foot at 4,300 and Udel 1 J7 Xtrovert Lady to Mr. Nick Crosbie of New Ross. Udel 1 T62 Waltz Melody to Mr. Eamon McKiernan, Monasterboice at 3,900 and Udel 1 R51 Xulting Melody to Mr. David Young of Athy for 3,000. Mr. John Kingston of Derry , Ballineen, West Cork purchased Udel 1 R51 Vernal Snowdrop at 3,300 and fought off determined opposition from a prominent Herefordshire UK based Hereford breeder bidding by telephone to secure Udel 1 R51 Windjammer for 4,400 as a herd sire. A Doonbiddie Hustler son at 24 months he weighed 1,055 kgs.

A total of nine lots sold for export. Five lots at an average of 2,500 including Udel 1 S41 Wooden Necklace at 3,100 and Udel 1 R51 Lovely Xochordia at 2,900 sold to UK based breeder Mr. Barry Meyers of Boundless Farm, Sussex . Mr. Frazer Sangster of Scotland purchased two heifers Udel 1 Xpressive Curly at 2,950 and Udel 1 Xpo Cherry to average 2,575.

Three lots sold to Northern Ireland the top price 3,000 being paid by David Smyth, Ballynahinch, Co. Down for Udel 1 R51 May Flower.

The Sale was an outstanding success and again illustrates the confidence of existing and new breeders in the Hereford breed. A host farm for the recent European Hereford Conference it confirms the quality of Irish Herefords.

The sale was held under the auspices of the Irish Hereford Breed Society with the assistance of Mr. Hugh P. Mulvihill auctioneer.
